Focus Groups at John Innes Community Centre & 258 Shuter St.

Shava, a More Moss Park Community Organizer, is a long-time user of John Innes Community Centre. On May 24, she pulled together some of the people she plays soccer with along with some folks who were enjoying the beautiful spring weather for a focus group. We heard about the need for more arts and cultural programming in the neighbourhood, and about how a park animated by people is a park that is more welcoming to all. The men in this focus group had a diverse set of experiences matched with equally diverse viewpoints.

“This place has helped shaped me into the person I am, I come here almost every day, I don’t know who I would be without the times and support I’ve had here,” said Shava.

“We need a stage or performing space, it could really change the story of this area. It would bring us together, let us get to know each other in a new way,” said Micah, (left).

“We can’t forget about the people around here without a home. I know their story. It was my story too. I’m a human and so are they. They need more support to get where they want to go,” said Desmond (right).

Later that day, some residents of the TCH buildings on Shuter Street continued to amaze us with their insights into what is needed in their neighbourhood and their dedication to ensuring that progress is made. We were joined by 15 residents, many of whom brought their kids!

We talked about how there is a need for outdoor spaces that people can come together in, barriers that neighbours face in accessing paid programming, and the need to maintain free and accessible programming that reflects the needs of local residents.

“Moss Park is a low-income neighbourhood, but it is a proud neighbourhood,” said one resident. “It might have a bad reputation, but it is safe. We take care of each other. We want to see a community centre that helps all people progress in their lives. Our needs as low-income people must be kept at the centre of this project, it must be built for us.”
