Focus Group at 275 Shuter St.
About 20 TCH residents came out on May 19 to share thoughts about their neighbourhood. Some residents have lived in the area for less than six months, others for decades. We had a great chat about what people love about Moss Park, and what they’d like to see done differently. We talked about how we can make a space that is welcoming for everyone, the need for more youth programming, and how accessibility issues are a barrier that stops some people from using John Innes Community Centre.
Helen and her daughter would “love more cultural programming from the neighbourhood. We are from all over the world, our community centre should reflect that.”
Sharmaarke has lived in Moss Park on and off for years, and is excited to be going back to school for baking at George Brown this Spring. “We need more education for the youth, programs for them after school. There isn’t a library close by, it would be good to have space for reading and homework.”
We were lucky to hear some great ideas and have some good laughs with the residents of 275 Shuter. Community members know what is best for themselves and for their neighbours, it’s important that they play a leading role in shaping their neighbourhood’s future.
These Moss Park Residents have spent a combined 125 years in total living and working in this neighbourhood. They have great insight into the strengths of this community and what is needed to make it more equitable and accessible for all.
