Focus Groups at 295 Shuter St. & The Filipino Centre

We covered a lot of ground in a short time on a scorching afternoon on Saturday, June 4, during focus groups with residents at 295 Shuter St. and The Filipino Centre at 597 Parliament St.

At 295 Shuter, we heard some interesting insights into everything from how community should be involved in the governance of the local spaces and what sports fields should be included to how Moss Park needs more opportunities for arts and culture.

June 4 (2)Nimo (in blue), is a strong voice and a leader in her community. Like a lot of folks we’ve been talking to, she’s excited about this potential project: “I can’t wait to see a new swimming pool, a better playground, and a community kitchen where we can all cook together,” she said.

At The Filipino Centre, we heard from youth workers what they’d like to see in their dream park, arena, and community centre. We spent a lot of time talking about how recreation and cultural programming can better respect and respond to diverse cultural practices and the needs of diverse communities. From their own experiences, they know there is a need for employment and skills training for youth and newcomers, and would love to see that incorporated into this project.

“It’s time for community centres to be about all communities, to have something for everyone, and to be accessible for everyone,” said Patricia.

“I play tennis at Moss Park, I’ve played badminton at John Innes,” said Jeremiah. “It’s a good centre, but I always have to wait for a court, and there has been times where the gym can’t handle everyone who wants to use it. More courts and more play space could help a lot.”

Big thank you’s to Nimo for everything she has done to help the More Moss Park team so far, and to Ben, The 519’s Newcomer Families Settlement Services Coordinator, for his help!
